When you live in Charleston SC like I do, it is tough to pick a favorite time of year. Charleston SC weather is wonderful for most of the year. Winter is mild, spring and fall are spectacular, and the summer is hot. But I love when it is hot, so I love the Charleston summer. I like when you step outside in August and the heat hits you like a wet blanket.
If you are wondering about the best time to visit Charleston, then I will give you a few answers below. I said “a few” because you cannot just visit Charleston once.
Here is the best time to visit Charleston SC:
Shake off those winter blues with perfect Charleston SC weather in spring
One of the reasons I live here is because I loathe winter. When it is cold, the pluff mud that runs through my veins freezes and I can barely move.
Spring is the best time to visit Charleston SC. The season changes rather quickly here so you better make your hotel reservations now so you don’t miss it. Spring is peak season here, so do not expect any great deals from Charleston SC hotels.
Nothing beats a 70℉ day in April when the air is clear and the humidity is low.
Quick Tip: While the temperature in spring in Charleston is pleasant, the water temperature will not be. It takes time for the ocean to warm up after winter, so if you want to swim, stick to the hotel pool.
Football isn’t the only thing great in the fall in Charleston
Fall is the best time to visit Charleston SC. The dog days of summer are sent packing down to Florida and hopefully they take the humidity with them.
I do not think there is a prettier place to be on earth than in Charleston during fall. Palmetto trees don’t change color but the marsh grasses do. They lose their green and turn brown during the cooler months. But they are most picturesque when they are in transition. Each spartina stalk is a careful blend of green, yellow and brown. So while you are fighting the leaf-peepers, I will be stalk-chasing in a boat on the Cooper river.
The Charleston SC weather in winter is mild and the season is short
It snowed in Charleston a few years ago and I am still not over it. Roads were icy for three days. I am not sure how some folks live with winter like that every year. Oh, never mind, they’ve moved to Charleston!
Winter is the best time to visit Charleston SC. Charleston is a great escape from harsh winters everywhere. Two Christmases ago I spent an afternoon on my friend’s boat because it was 60℉.
Winter is also a great time to see the #1 Ranked Tourist City in the World. Many Charleston SC hotels offer discounts and there are fewer tourists, shorter lines, and open reservations in some of the city’s many incredible restaurants.
Do you need to be told that summer is great in Charleston?
The other day I was heading out to the beach with some friends and this strange old lady stopped me. She wanted to know if we were expecting any damage from hurricane Ida. I said no since Ida was making landfall about 800 miles west of here. Then she asked me if we were on the gulf, meaning the Gulf of Mexico. This lady was from Texas and I guess she hasn’t seen a globe or Google Maps. I guess they really do think the earth is mostly Texas.
Summer is the best time to visit Charleston SC. The beaches feature fine white sand, the sea breeze will save you from the stifling heat, and if you are lucky hurricanes will jog rapidly north.
